Nine people were confirmed dead and 37 others were missing after floodwaters raged in southwestern Colombia.

"There are about 37 people missing. This morning there were six bodies but later three more surfaced, making nine bodies found," Minister of Social Security Diego Palacio said on Thursday.

He added that about 250 people were evacuated with helicopters and some 700 remain stuck in their homes along the country's Pacific coast.

The heavy rains sparked flooding and mudslides in the Valle del Caucu department between Cali and the port of Buenaventura.
