A boiler exploded in a prototype power plant in northern Bangladesh killing nine people and injuring 50, police said on Wednesday.

The blast occurred on Tuesday during the test run of a gas-fed generator, designed by a local college teacher, in Gaibandha district, 300 km north of Dhaka.

Dozens of people had gathered to watch a demonstration of the generator to run irrigation pumps in the energy-starved area, a police officer said.
Hundreds of people have been demonstrating in Bangladesh demanding adequate power supplies.
