The Hindi Samiti of the College had decided to dedicate the event to poet Nirala who used to celebrate his birthday on 'Basant Panchami'.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Rajendra Kumar, former head of Hindi Department of Allahabad University said liberation, freedom and independence were the favourite words of Nirala.

"Nirala always related the words fearlessness and independence. He opined that independence cannot be acquired without being fearless. He also stressed on the liberation of poetry and human beings. Besides, the works of Nirala, Kabir and Premchand always played an important role in unifying the people. They always find relevance in our society irrespective of the period or era we are living in", said Prof Kumar.

"Education is not meant for individual development. It results in the development of the entire community. It is always necessary to absorb the vital points necessary for progress," he added.

Principal Father Louis Mascarenhas said, the event is an opportunity for us to express our love towards Hindi. "In this era of IT boom, the passion for literature has taken a backseat and that passion needs to be revived", he said.

Earlier the event was given an auspicious start by lighting the traditional lamp followed by reciting of Saraswati Vandana. The students presented few extracts from 'dohas' of Kabir and Rahim. Yash Srivastav and Arindam Mitra rendered speeches on the life and works of Nirala. A nukkad play was presented by the students of 'Snehashray'. Ishan Bhatt and Sumit Ranjan presented the poems of Nirala.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Abbas Rizvi, teacher of SJC. The students of St Mary's Convent Inter College and St Anthony's Convent were also present on the occasion.
