Much before McDonald’s appeared on the horizon, Nirula’s pioneered the fast food business in the city and Indianised its offerings much before the new entrants could react to the pulse of the market. With an extensive menu, a slew of ‘super meal deals’ (including North Indian and Chinese platters) and ‘100% vegetarian ice-creams’, Nirula’s offers more variety than its competition, but it hasn’t succeeded in maintaining consistency of quality and ensuring timely delivery. Its pizzas are without pizzazz, its burgers lack personality, its dal makhni tastes like cream and the quality of its seekh kebabs swings like a yo-yo. But it scores with its ice-creams (Nirula’s were the first to introduce flavours like Rum Raisin and Butterscotch), ice-cream sodas and sundaes. Its Hot Chocolate Fudge, without doubt, is an all-time best-seller. If only its food offerings were as good!
