A LARGE number of voters may be deprived of their Constitutional right to exercise franchise in the forthcoming Nagar Nigam elections. The reason being incomplete electoral rolls.
It may be noted that after delimitation of wards, new kinds of problems have cropped up before the district election office in updating the electoral rolls. A number of objections regarding preparation of voter lists polling station-wise are yet to be disposed of.
However, the officials claimed they had settled all objections received by them in the regard. Those who lodged their objections their names have been added in their respective ward's voter list. The State Election Commission has authorised SDM Sadar and two ACMs to look after the objections filed by people against irregularities in electoral lists. However, sources said that these officials tried their best to redress objections but they failed to pay their focus towards removal of the actual discrepancies in the lists.
Sources alleged that despite clear-cut directives to show the electoral lists to public, the lists were not made available to general voters for inspection. SK Baranwal, Deputy Election Officer, said all objections received by him have been redressed.
The lists were finally published on May 15. However, voters interested to see the list may do so at the Election Office. The revised lists would be released on September 28, said the officer. Meanwhile, as many as 947 polling booths will be set up at 158 polling stations in the city for the coming Nagar Nigam elections.
