Mishra said the administration had given top priority to the bird flu issue and thus workshops were being organised at the district headquarters.

Expressing his views on the occasion, chief veterinary officer Dr VS Tomar said bird flu was caused by a virus. Besides birds, it could spread through pigs and horses, he said.

Dr Tomar claimed the Animal Husbandry Department was keeping a close watch on major centres that attracted migratory birds.

He stressed the need for proper training to handle the situation. He also spoke about various protective methods to diagnose the flu in animals and human samples. Interestingly, health department officials were absent from the workshop.

They are considered important members of the task force to handle bird flu. Vaccine and calling teams have been constituted in the district.
