No common good

The Finance Minister has not done anything for the common man in Budget 2006. The hike in the service tax was unfair.

The Finance Minister has not done anything for the common man in Budget 2006. The hike in the service tax was unfair. Instead of making cars cheaper, he should have reduced to a large extent the price of computers that are much in demand by school students. The ATM tax on operators will soon be passed on to ATM users, again an unfair move.

Establish the truth

Apropos of Delhi Police to challenge verdict (March 1), there is ample evidence to prove that the investigating officers and prosecutors in the Jessica Lall case had colluded with the accused. The case must be re-investigated with a clear purpose in mind — to punish those guilty of deceiving the law of the land.

Uncommon logic

Shayan Munshi, the witness who changed his statement in the Jessica Lall case, has said on TV that he wants to forget the past and move on in life and concentrate on his career. Why, and how, has he failed to realise that more than the money and influence of the rich, it is the goodwill and love of the public that will shape his career in films? Doesn't he realise that he has completely lost out on his audience's respect?

Still on shaky ground

Apropos of Two quake builders jailed (February 28), it is worthwhile to note that there is still no national will to make buildings in earthquake-prone areas resistant to seismic shocks. There is still no mechanism to certify that highrise residential blocks are complying with seismic design codes.

Neither do buyers enquire about seismic checks of apartments that they are about to purchase. How many earthquakes will it take for us to shake off this stupor?

Time to be friends

Even if some Indians want to protest against George W. Bush's visit, we can't not welcome the American president for he represents one of the world's biggest democracies. Far smarter to befriend the US and engage in constructive alliances.
