Ironically, none of the government agencies has ever conducted a comprehensive survey on the number of borewells being used for construction in Gurgaon. The Gurgaon district magistrate directed the Huda and the MCG to submit details of ground water extraction and number of borewells in their respective areas within two days. According to sources, there were a total of about 20,000 borewells registered in Gurgaon in 2001 and the number had increased to about 30,000 in 2011, despite notifications issued by the CGWA in the year 2001, 2002 and 2006.

Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Town and Country Planning, SS Dhillon admitted that the Gurgaon authorities did not provide details of borewells despite repeated reminders.

"Administration has not issued permission for digging a borewell in the past two years. We have appointed 20 teams to monitor borewells," said PC Meena, deputy commissioner.
