No demolition near Air Force ammo depot: SC

The supreme court on Wednesday, stayed the demolition of encroachment on the government land within the 900 metre radius of the strategic Air Force ammunition depot in Gurgaon.

The supreme court on Wednesday, stayed the demolition of encroachment on the government land within the 900 metre radius of the strategic Air Force ammunition depot in Gurgaon.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court last year, had ordered no further construction on the land. The supreme court bench of justices DK Jain and AR Dave accepted the special leave petition (SLP) filed by residents including a Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) councillor Gaje Singh.

Notices will we served to the ministry of defence, the Haryana government, MCG and district town and country planning department.

The city has witnessed violent protests in the past by those who own establishments within the restricted zone. More than 10,368 unauthorised establishments have come up in the area. The ongoing dispute between the Haryana government and the ministry of defence has led thousands of residents’ fate hanging in uncertainty.

While the depot that was built many years ago was secluded, the city has grown many folds and so have the population, bringing the depot within the confines of the city.
