No interviews for nursery admissions

Delhi High Court has decreed that children seeking admission to pre-nursery and nursery classes must not be interviewed.

Reiterating that children seeking admission to pre-nursery and nursery classes in the capital's unaided public schools must not be interviewed, Delhi High Court Friday allowed for a "limited interaction" with the parents.

However, a division bench comprising judges M K Sharma and Hima Kohli also made it clear to the Action Committee of Recognised Unaided Schools that the interaction would be conducted after the admission process was over and would be limited to the extent of querying the parents about the information provided by them in the admission forms about their wards.

The bench also repeated its earlier direction that the schools would not be allowed to subject the children to interview for preparing merit lists for admission.

The court has already made it clear to the action committee that it will have to implement the Ganguly Committee recommendations for admissions to the two classes on an experimental basis in the current academic session.

It has also recommended that there should be no observation of children either in formal or informal conditions to decide on their admissions.

The bench has been hearing appeals by parents of three children against a single-judge order of the court in which Justice S K Kaul had in January 2003 rejected their petitions seeking a direction to debar schools in the capital from subjecting parents as well as their wards to interviews for admissions to these classes.

The matter will now come up for hearing on January 17.
