Pervez Musharraf is known to be intolerant of any opposition to his authority. This time he has axed the Chief Justice and dealt a body blow to the judiciary. This is also aimed at sending a signal to other judges as to what is in store for them if any judicial activism that may undermine his authority continues. How long the opposition parties and the lawyers who are protesting the assault on the judiciary remain united is to be seen.

Picture imperfect

AG Noorani in Through the smoke screen (March 13) has dealt with the issue of not showing a movie in cinema halls in Gujarat. Whatever happened in Gujarat is known to the public. No sensible government could have allowed the screening of a movie with even the slightest risk of inflaming public sentiment. It is beyond comprehension how a movie could have helped in tracing a lost child. I wish Noorani had taken a pragmatic view instead.

It is surprising that people of Gujarat cannot watch the movie Parzania because a few influential people do not want them to. Is this how a democracy works? Let’s forget about the state government. What about the UPA government? Is it not the responsibility of the Centre to protect the liberty of people to express their views? In the case of screening Parzania, it seems the Opposition in Gujarat is either afraid of people like Bajrangi or they support him.

Sitting ducks

With reference to the report Desktop workers risk blood clots, says new study (March 13), with the fast emergence of the IT and BPO sector where every employee tends to spend a lot of time in front of the computer, grave dangers arise. It is said one should not sit for long periods in front of the computer but move about every now and then.
