The Haryana Government has said “no” to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' plans to upgrade the Mehrauli Gurgaon Road to national highway status and widen it to a 8-lane road. The government said widening the stretch was not possible due to land acquisition issues.
Instead, the Haryana Government has suggested an alternate proposal: to widen the existing arterial road cutting off from MG Road near Sikanderpur and connecting to Gurgaon Expressway at Hero Honda Chowk. The proposal is reported to have been accepted by the Union ministry.
The Minister for Information Technology, PWD and Parliamentary Affairs, Haryana Government Randeep Surjewala said the Haryana Government had advised the Transport Ministry and the Delhi government to widen MG Road to four-lane level only.
This could be done, said Surjewala, by taking its route right under the existing alignment of the Qutb Minar-Gurgaon Metro Line, as widening the existing MG road could render many residential properties, farms and hotels in trouble and because of acquisition issues related to defence land.
