Ending his 24-hour fast, Marandi formally announced his resignation from the Lok Sabha and the BJP. He told reporters that he had faxed his resignations to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and BJP President Rajnath Singh respectively.

Marandi said he was currently in "no mood" to join any political party.

His resignation came even as the BJP leadership made last-minute efforts to persuade him not to take the step, first by deputing General Secretary (Organisation) Sanjay Joshi to talk to him and later asking former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha to intervene in the matter.
