No problems between Cong-PDP: Mehbooba

Mufti is optimistic that the relationship between the two parties will be bonded further, reports Arun Joshi.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has told Congress President Sonia Gandhi that the alliance government of the two parties is "functioning smooth in J&K and voiced the optimism that the relationship between the two like-minded parties would solidify further in the future.

The Congress-PDP alliance government in J&K has recently been more in news because of fissures between the two rather than any sweet talk. The two parties have been using harsh words on the issue of self-rule, which PDP projects as the only mantra for Kashmir solution.

Congress leaders in the state decry it as a borrowed Pakistani idea being showcased as indigenous by PDP. But away in Delhi, it was talk of harmony and strengthening of relations between the two parties.

Talking to Hindustan Times over phone after her meeting with Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Tuesday, the PDP president said that it was a “ courtesy call before my Cairo visit.”

Mehbooba is one of the four Kashmiri leaders invited to an international conference on resolution of Middle East crisis to the Egyptian capital.

Mehbooba said besides sharing her perspective on resolution of Israel-Palestine crisis - the subject on which she is to speak at Cairo - with Sonia Gandhi, she discussed the working of the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir.

"I told her that there were no problems. The people were working in the field and both parties were cooperating with each other."

This was Mehbooba Mufti’s second meeting with Sonia Gandhi in the past seven weeks.

Meanwhile, Sajjad Lone and Mirwaiz have also left for Delhi. The two would be speaking on the subject: Islam and West in the context of Israel-Palestine conflict.

"Our endeavour would be to tell the world that Islam stands for peace. Its image is being distorted in the west. There is need to put the things in right context," Mirwaiz said.
