An expert committee appointed by the Aligarh Muslim University to look into a "radioactive material threat" has concluded that the radiation levels in the area were "within safe limits".
The eight-member committee was appointed last week following some media reports regarding the threat posed by the radioactive material stored in the laboratory of Department of Physics for nearly fifty years.
Senior AMU officials said the findings of the committee have been corroborated by the inspection report of the Chief Scientific Officer, Radiological Safety Division of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), BK Singh, who visited the Department yesterday and found it "safe and secure".
The report has suggested that as an "extra precautionary measure" the storage room at the Physics laboratory should be protected by a barbed wire fence until the radioactive material is transferred to the AERB.
