National and state highways in Haryana will soon have speed-limit signboards at every three to four kilometres gap. The move will help the Gurgaon traffic police prevent accidents on city highways.
A senior police official has asked concerned departments to start the installation of signboards soon. According to sources, the matter was discussed in a meeting of senior traffic police officials held on June 10 at Panchkula.
In the meeting, the director general of police, Haryana had expressed displeasure over the inadequate number of such boards on national highways and state highways in the state.
The signboards will depict speed limits for plying of various type of vehicles such as car, bikes and trucks.
“As a signboard will be visible on highways, it will make drivers realise its importance. It will help reduce accidents,” said a senior official on condition of anonymity.
“More than 400 people died in road accidents last year in Gurgaon. In the first four months of this year, the city reported 113 accidents, in which 125 people lost their lives,” said the official.
“Though the number of accidental deaths has come down, there is a lot to be done in this regard. We want to make the city safe for commuters. Maximum accidents took place due to over-speeding and rash driving. We are trying to control such violations,” he said.
