China on Friday virtually asked India not to make a claim jointly with Japan as part of G-4 if it wanted Beijing's backing for UNSC seat.
However, China has extended conditional support to India's bid for permanent membership of the UN Security Council.
It also stopped short of backing the Indo-US civil nuclear deal as it said Beijing was not worried by the growing relations between New Delhi and Washington.
"We need developing countries in the expanded Security Council and hope India would play larger role in the international affairs, including the UN," Chinese Ambassador Sun Yuxi said, emphasising that China was "not an obstacle" to New Delhi's bid.
He said China had worked against the G-4, comprising India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, because Tokyo was in the group.
"We are opposed to Japan's bid as it has not adopted the correct attitude to historic issues," the envoy said addressing a seminar on 'Emerging trends in Sino-Indian relations' here.
He said China could not trust Japan to be a responsible permanent member of the Security Council.
"If we let G-4 plan to proceed, there is a danger that in the end there will be a scenario that Japan will be in and India out. That is the worst scene we want to see. We would like to have the situation the other way round," he said.
