The government has given the nod to 27 colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, to start postgraduate courses, 18 of which will offer master’s in commerce (MCom), owing to a high demand for this course.

“Advanced accountancy, financial accounting and auditing and management are the most popular subjects at the undergraduate level, with more than 50,000 students opting for financial accounting and auditing.

These students then want take up the same subjects for their master’s degree,” said Dr Siddeshwar Gadge, chairman, Board of Accountancy Practice.

“Till some years ago, only a few colleges like RA Podar, Sydenham and Mulund College of Commerce offered the postgraduate degree. However, with more professions now requiring a master’s degree, MCom is gaining wide popularity,” he added.

“Sixteen years of education is compulsory for students seeking to study in the US, and with a post graduate degree, it becomes easy for them, which is why many students take up MCom after graduation,” said Parvathi Venkatesh, principal Mulund College of Commerce.
