Noida cops face heat on child killings

The police investigation into the serial killing of children — for which businessman Moninder Singh Pandher and Surender Koli were arrested at Nithari village in Noida — will have to pick up pace.

Chief Justice of India-designate K.G. Balakrishnan wants a thorough probe into the matter; the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is seeking a “factual report” from the state in two weeks; and the National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought an action taken report from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

On Tuesday, Balakrishnan said: “The police should thoroughly investigate the matter, find those involved in the crime, file an investigation report, take medical evidence and do all that is required. The police should also take statements from witnesses.”

The NHRC sent notices to the chief secretary and the director general of police of Uttar Pradesh, seeking details of how the probe is proceeding.

It said the officials found responsible for prolonged negligence should be “sacked forthwith”. The NCW — which had last year asked the state government to take immediate action to trace the children who had gone missing from Nithari — also wrote to Yadav.
