This takes the death toll on the swanky new Yamuna expressway, which opened less than a month ago on August 9, to 11.

According to police, tyre bursts and over-speeding are the primary reasons behind the five fatal accidents so far.On Monday, too, the two students — Gaurav Arora and Rahul — from Gurgaon’s School of Inspired Leadership were waiting in the car after a tyre burst. Their friends had gone to a repair shop nearby. Tragedy struck when a speeding truck rammed the car from behind, killing both occupants.

Cops say they cannot check speedsters because speed tracking devices don’t always function properly.

Vehicles parked along the sides of the road have also proven to be a major threat. This is usually a result of frequent tyre bursts, which has raised questions about the all-concrete road used on the expressway.

“Motorists are being advised to check their tyres before they go on expressway,” said a spokesperson of Jaypee Infratech, the developers.

Alarmed at the rising number of fatalities, top officials held a meeting in Agra recently.

“There is a need for an effective speed monitoring mechanism at different segments. Vehicles can be penalised when they slow down at toll plazas. We need to have a rapid communication system so violators can be detected and persecuted,” an official said.
