The case of the brutal murder of Noida teen Aarushi Talwar took a bizarre and unexpected turn on Saturday, when the corpse of the man police had declared as the “prime suspect”, was discovered in the same house.
A retired DSP who had gone to pay his condolences to the Talwars, followed a hunch born out of his police training to the terrace of the apartment, and discovered the body of the family’s Nepali domestic help Hemraj, lying with his throat slit.
None of the Noida policemen who swarmed the house after the 14-year-old student of DPS, Noida was found stabbed in her bedroom on Friday morning, had bothered to go up to the terrace, though SP M.K. Mishra had promptly announced a reward for information on Hemraj, and sent a team to Nepal to look for him.
Dentists Rajesh and Nupur Talwar lived with their daughter in a top-floor flat of a three-storey building in Sector 25, Jal Vayu Vihar. They used the building’s terrace as an extension of their flat. Asked why police hadn’t checked it, Mishra said: “The door was locked and Dr Talwar told us the key was with Hemraj.” He couldn’t explain why police didn’t break the lock.

“A man was lying there in a pool of blood. His throat was slit deep. The body had been dragged for about 12 feet. Hemraj could not have slit his own throat and then locked the terrace door from the outside. Obviously someone killed him,” Gautam said.
Mishra said the bloodstains Gautam had spotted were not “so visible” earlier. “Today after the fingerprint expert applied chemicals, they became more visible.”
