Normal life was paralysed in the Darjeeling Hills of West Bengal for the second day on Saturday after the Gorkha National Liberation Front called an indefinite bandh following clashes between its supporters and the Gorkha Jammukti Morcha activists.
Inspector General of Police (North Bengal) RJS Nawla told PTI over phone from Darjeeling where he is camping that the Rapid Action Force, Combat force and the district police have been deployed in the area and there was no report of any untoward incident.
The IGP said the Army has also been requisitioned for duty in the Hills to help restore confidence among the people.
"We have decided to maintain law and order at all cost," he added.
On Friday, clashes broke out between GNLF supporters and GJM activists after a former GNLF Councillor, K B Gurung, was stabbed with a kukri when the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council headquarters at Lalkuthi was gheraoed by supporters of GJM which was resisted by the GNLF cadres and employees of DGHC.
GNLF supporters alleged that Gurung was stabbed by GJM activists and gheraoed the Darjeeling police station, demanding arrest of 20 GJM activists including its president.

{{/usCountry}}The District Magistrate Rajesh Pande promulgated prohibitory orders yesterday after the clashes broke out. Meanwhile, a report from Darjeeling said that Gurung was shifted to a nursing home here where he was stated to be out of danger.
