DESPITE EXTENSIVE unusual rains and hailstorms in the State over the past couple of days, there has not been much damage to crops.
According to agriculture department sources, damage to standing and harvested crops has taken place only in Bhopal and Jabalpur division and this, too, is limited to less than five per cent.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Agriculture Director R S Manral said there had been no rains or hailstorm in Gwalior and Sagar division.
In Ujjain division, some areas of Mandsaur district had experienced rains. Similarly, hailstorm accompanied by rains was experienced in areas of Ujjain, Mahidpur, Ratlam and Neemuch as well. But, it has done virtually no damage to crops.
In areas under Indore division, some rounds of drizzles were experienced in Indore district while hailstorm and thundershowers hit Khargone district.
Director agriculture said instead of damaging crops, rains had come as a boon for farmers in unirrigated areas of Malwa and Nimar region since water scarcity was a common problem there.
On the other hand, crops in some areas of Bhopal division particularly Badi in Raisen district and Harda may have been damaged but not much, he said.
There has also been rains accompanied by hailstorms in Vidisha but crops in the district have not been affected. In Jabalpur division, rains and hailstorms were reported from Jabalpur, Seoni and Narsinghgarh districts and there was apprehension of some damage to crops.
