Now, feel at Westminster while in Connaught Circus. London’s Big Ben, the world’s largest four-faced chiming clock, has been adopted by our very own Central Park, only in a much smaller form.
London’s Mayor, Ken Livingstone, on Monday, unveiled the 54-feet replica of the Big Ben erected in Central Park. The monument was unveiled to mark the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by James Bidwell, Chief Executive of Visit London and Dr Kaul, Chairman and Managing Director of Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation. This memorandum seeks to bring closer working relations and boost tourism between Delhi and London.
The original Big Ben, situated near the Houses of Parliaments in London, stands 315-feet tall. Apart from their height, the two Big Bens also differ immensely in their age. The original Big Ben being erected in 1858, there exists a 149 years age gap between the two structures. Originally called the “Clock Tower”, the structure is universally called the Big Ben (name of the main bell housed in the tower) and has also earned a few other names such as St. Stephen's Tower and Big Tom.
“It’s so simple, step off the Metro, stroll out of the Rajiv Chowk Metro station, have a look at the Big Ben and go home,” said Radhika Sharan, a visitor at the unveiling ceremony. The Big Ben is essentially a British structure, however, the one in Central Park is Indian, feel some. “This Big Ben is not created in London, it is created in India,” said Bidwell.
