AFTER A period of five years and nine months, the city is all set to get its new mayor.
It may be mentioned that since the Nagar Mahapalika became Nagar Nigam three mayors--Ravi Bhushan Wadhawan, Dr Rita Bahuguna Joshi and Dr KP Srivastava have been elected so far. As per official records Shiv Charan Das was the first elected chairman of Nagar Palika from 1916 to 1920. In later years the post was graced by Purshottam Das Tandon, Kamata Prasad Kakkar, Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Kapil Deo Malaviya, Kailash Nath Katju, Ranendra Nath Basu uptil 1948.
Vishwambhar Nath Pandey was the first Nagar Pramukh elected in 1960 after the city getting the status of Nagar Mahapalika. Before this he remained chairman of Nagar Palika from 1948 to 1960. Thus, he is considered to be the Mayor who served the post for more than 12 years. Thereafter Bal Krishna Rao, M Zulifkar Ullah, Beni Prasad Agrawal, Baijnath Kapoor, Shyam Nath Kakkar, M Samiullah, Shyam Sundar Sharma, Satya Prakash Malaviya and Ramji Dwivedi served the post.
Shyama Charan Gupta was the first mayor elected in 1989 after the mayor's tenure was increased from one year to five years. Ravi Bhushan Wadhawan was next first mayor following enhancement of city's status from Nagar Mahapalika to Nagar Nigam in 1993. Dr Rita Bahuguna Joshi was the next to become the mayor in 1995. She is the first woman to become the mayor in the history of Allahabad Municipal Corporation. Dr KP Srivastava was elected on the post as Samajwadi Party candidate in December 2000.
