Policemen in Mahoba town of Uttar Pradesh Friday night beat Bhogan Yadav for allegedly picking up a Rs 10 note belonging to an elderly woman bus passenger. Yadav, who was travelling in a bus, was handed over to the police.

The boy was beaten even more severely when he tried to escape from the police station.

"I have ordered a probe into the incident and suspended a constable," RP Singh, police chief of Mahoba district, about 200 km from the state capital in Lucknow, told IANS.

He said the boy was sent home on Friday.

Singh could not ascertain whether the Rs 10 note was recovered from the boy or not.

"An enquiry has been ordered as we need to know why other cops present inside the police station did not intervene in the matter," he said.

On February 3, police in Etawah district's Kailokhar village, about 300 km from Lucknow, pulled eight-year-old Komal up by her hair and twisted her ears for allegedly stealing Rs 280. The shameful incident was watched on TV channels across India.
