This won’t come as good news for teetotalers with a sweet tooth. The humble sandesh is going the way of the cognac chocolate and the rum ball. Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy, a famous sweet shop in Kolkata, is launching alcohol-laced versions of the traditional sandesh.

Isn’t that, kind of, radical? Prasanta Nandy, one of the three partners at the shop said: “The idea evolved from cakes, pastries, chocolates and several other dishes that require wine for their preparation.”

He, however, refused to reveal how the sweets will be prepared — “It’s a trade secret” — except to say that only three types of liquors — whisky, vodka and rum — will be used. The Rum Sandesh will contain Old Monk Rum, the Vodka Sandesh Smirnoff and the Whisky Sandesh will be made using Teachers Highland Cream.

“We had tried using Johnny Walker Black Label, but the end product became too expensive for middle class consumers,” said Nandy. Each Whiskey Sandesh will cost Rs 20-25 and the Vodka Sandesh Rs 10-15. The Rum Sandesh will be cheaper and cost Rs 10.

Alcohol and Indian sweets, we’ve been told, shouldn’t be taken together. Well, another shibboleth has crumbled.
