The latest buzzword in Delhi’s dance circle is modern dance, which encourages freedom of expression.
Be it ballet, salsa, or hip hop, Delhiites have embraced Western dance with open arms. And now, the latest dance style to make waves in the city is modern dance. So far, there have been few places that offer training in this technique. But with US-trained dancers Janet Reed and Sheila Coleman opening their classes in Delhi, the scope of learning modern dance has widened.
“Modern dance came out of the love for traditional African dance. A modern piece makes a connection with the audience that leaves an impact” says Reed, who’s here to develop and implement the dance curriculum at Musical Dreams institute.
"The modern dance technique can increase a dancer’s personal movement", says Coleman, who’s in Delhi to expand the western dance syllabus of the Danceworx institute by instructing modern dance techniques.
The popularity of this dance style is quite evident, as a number of youngsters have enrolled in Reed’s and Coleman’s classes. “I have fallen in love with the Horton technique. It has been a month and I already feel the change in my body”, says Komal Kathpal, a student learning modern dance at Danceworx, Pitampura. Both Coleman and Reed advocate leotards and tights as the attire for modern dance, and back discipline and etiquette in their class.

With 10 years of training and 17 years of teaching experience, Reed is glad that her application was selected by Musical Dreams in Delhi. In the city till August 2012, Reed is trained in jazz, ballet, tap dance, traditional African and modern styles of dance.
