AFTER PUSHING through several solid waste management proposals recently, officials of the ADB-financed Urban Water Supply and Environment Project have now focussed attention on water supply. Specifically, augmenting capacity to meet the increased storage need that the 360 million litres daily (MLD) Narmada-III will bring in its wake.
The Project Implementation Unit recently submitted five tender bids amounting to Rs 4.31 crore for constructing five overhead tanks (OHTs), each with a capacity of 3,000 kilolitres, to the Project Monitoring Unit (PMU) in Bhopal.
The PMU has, in turn, forwarded these to the Technical Clearance Committee and work on the project is expected to commence as soon as bids are cleared.
A total of 23 overhead tanks (OHTs) with a combined capacity of 69 million litres are to be built at a total cost of Rs 17.91 crore under the Narmada project.
Put together with the 98.4 million litres that the 36 existing tanks are capable of housing, this would hike storage capacity to 167.4 million litres. Or nearly 4 million litres more than would be required post-Narmada.
According to a report prepared by the PIU, the OHT construction would be carried out in three phases. While five tanks would be built in the first phase 9 tanks apiece would be constructed during the second and third phase, each of which would cost Rs 6.80 crore.

{{/usCountry}}Based on technical expertise and fiscal capacity the ADB has pre-qualified a total of 49 contractors constructing the overhead tanks.
The task of surveying sites for OHTs to be constructed in the first phase has already been carried out. Five bids for constructing OHTs were sent to the PMU in Bhopal which has forwarded these to the Technical Clearance Committee. Tenders will be floated as soon as the committee clears the bids.
