As the chances of getting approval from the Centre for its Rs 900-crore sewerage development plan to be implemented in trans-Hindon areas of Ghaziabad have diminished, the state government has now decided to break up the previous project into phases.

UP Jal Nigam has devised a Rs 255-crore plan for augmenting the sewerage network in three localities of trans-Hindon areas - Indirapuram, Kaushambi and Vaishali - in the first phase.
"The previous plan is still pending with the central government for approval. Chances are that it may not get approved. So we have devised a new plan for the development of sewerage network in a phased manner," said PK Asudani, chief engineer, UP Jal Nigam.
Apart from upgradation of the existing lines, a network of around 140 km of sewer lines would be laid under the new project.
Besides, the capacity of five intermediate pumping stations in trans-Hindon would be enhanced to cater to a sewerage discharge of around 109 MLD.
The new plan, devised under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns, is now forwarded to the central government for approval.

The previous plan, proposed under the central government-sponsored National River Conservation Plan (NRCP), included the laying of 490-km sewer lines and construction of three sewage pumping stations. It was prepared to protect river Hindon from contamination.
The trans-Hindon areas mostly comprise residential colonies like Indirapuram, Vasundhara, Kaushambi, Vaishali, Mohan Nagar, Rajendra Nagar and Shalimar Garden having a population of around seven lakh.
It is estimated that only 60% of the trans-Hindon area is covered with sewer network laid by various agencies like the Ghaziabad Development Authority, Housing Board and UP Jal Nigam.
