Shillong Idol, having similarity with the name of one these two TV music shows, has been launched with an aim to turn the event into a North-East regional one depending on the response of people, the organisers said today.

Launched by Rhythm Music Organisation, the programme's audition round was held on January 28 with 74 contestants, drawn mostly from the Meghalaya capital. The organisation was doing it for the first time in Shillong.

Of the 74 contestants, 48 were selected for the next 'orchestra' round to be held on April nine next.

The winner of the contest would be given opportunity to bring out a Hindi music album to be released next year by the organisation all over India, said its Chairman Ravi Rao.

"Depending on the response of the public, we wish to convert the programme into a North-East idol drawing participants from all over the region," Rao told reporters here.

The organisation was trying to rope in some TV channels for telecasting the talent hunt programme to popularise it, the Chairman said.
