An 11-member jury of global business leaders bestowed the honour on Murthy at a spectacular awards ceremony at Monte Carlo on Saturday, according to information received here.

Murthy was cited for his "intellectually, philosophically, ethically and spiritually driven leadership" and his company's "outstanding financial performance and global impact in a dynamic and volatile industry."

Infosys is India's largest software exporter by value.

Murthy was among 26 outstanding worldwide entrepreneurs vying for the 2003 title, the third since global services major Ernst & Young launched the award. He was selected on the basis of a written statement and meetings over a four-day period with the jury.

Said Murthy of the award: "I am extremely grateful to the jury for this recognition. It is an extraordinary act since it raises the hope, confidence and enthusiasm of millions of entrepreneurs in India and will spur them to create a large number of jobs which the country needs badly."

Noted James S. Turley, chairman of Ernst & Young Global: "Murthy's story is a truly inspirational one. He has demonstrated quality leadership and embodies both entrepreneurial spirit and business excellence."
