Though officials described the meeting as a courtesy call, Menon is understood to have apprised Jayalalithaa on the Centre's action on mitigating sufferings of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Jayalalithaa is understood to have taken up the issue of Indian fishermen being killed or arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy with the national security advisor.

The meeting assumes significance in the wake of the Tamil Nadu assembly passing a resolution on Wednesday, demanding that the Centre impose economic sanctions on Sri Lanka for its alleged killing of Tamils in the island nation.

This is the first top level contact between the Centre and AIADMK government after Jayalalithaa took over as the chief minister.

The resolution had sought imposition of economic sanctions on Sri Lanka by India to 'rein in' Colombo on the Tamils issue and pressed for speedy rehabilitation of displaced Tamils.
