Amid reports about threats to the country's nuclear plants, the government on Monday said such installations were "absolutely secure".

"All nuclear installations are very secure. They are absolutely secure, no question about it," Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Prithviraj Chavan told PTI in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is incharge of the Department of Atomic Energy, which runs 17 nuclear power plants across the country through the state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).

"The nuclear plants are very secure. There are multiple layers of security," Chavan said.

His remarks come in the wake of reports that the Centre had asked state governments having nuclear installations to tighten security around such facilities to foil any possible terror attack.

The alert was sounded by the Home Ministry on specific intelligence inputs on possibility of terrorists targeting atomic facilities.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), located in Mumbai is understood to have been put on highest alert.
