With reference to Pallava Bagla’s article A seat at the high table (July 30), it is a diplomatic success for India to have clinched a nuclear deal with the US despite being a non-signatory to NPT and a non-P-5 nation. This will ensure India’s energy security and end the country’s decades-long nuclear isolation. Getting the required nod from the NSG and IAEA does not seem to be too difficult.

Tolerating intolerance

I subscribe to Sadia Dehlvi’s view in Ideology of intolerance (July 26) that Muslims should reject the enemy within that adopts the path of extremism in the name of Islam. But I object to her remarks that Wahabi ideology is rooted in the politics of extremism and negates the Quranic message of brotherhood. The Wahabi movement was started to purify Islam from the stains of innovation brought in by the present form of Sufism.

A needless controversy

Pankaj Vohra in Gender’s worked for Bedi (July 30) rightly states that after losing her battle to be appointed Police Commissioner of Delhi, Kiran Bedi went into a state of shock and criticised the government action. Bedi is a responsible officer who understands the rules governing her service. Many suitable avenues are open for aggrieved government servants to seek redressal.

It is a pity that a senior IPS officer like Kiran Bedi is adopting all sorts of trade union tactics in pressurising the government to reverse its decision to promote Y.S. Dadwal as Police Commissioner. This is the prerogative of the government and it is incumbent on Bedi to follow the service code of conduct.
