THE NARMADA Valley Development Authority (NVDA) has drawn an action plan for training of fishermen who have been displaced due to developmental projects on the river Narmada, as “they get the first claim to any profit reaped from fishing in the dam reservoirs,” according to NVDA vice-chairman Uday Kumar Verma.
“We have planned the training programme giving priority to the displaced fishermen in fish production work. As many as 243 fisherpersons, including 100 women, affected due to the Indira Sagar Project have been trained,” Verma said in an official release in the City.
Fishermen displaced due to Sardar Sarovar Project and other reservoirs too would be given priority for training, he said adding that it is estimated that the whole valley would provide direct and indirect employment to about 10,000 persons in fish production.
Further, the NVDA is developing the requisite infrastructure for tapping the estimated 3,500 metric tonne of fish production —- valued at Rs 25.77 crore —- that would be possible with the newly-built and soon-to-be completed seven reservoirs in the Narmada Valley.
Country’s largest reservoir of 913 sq km has been formed due to the Indira Sagar dam in Khandwa district, of which an area of 59,000 sq hectare is suitable for fishing. Similarly, the newly-build Maan reservoir has 696 hectare, Omkareshwar dam would have 8330 hectare, Jobat (946 hectare) and Upper Beda (830 hectare).

{{/usCountry}}The inter-state Sardar Sarovar Project would also form a huge reservoir, of which fishing can be done in an area of about 10,000 hectare, according to NVDA’s Fish Production Works in-charge Hirasingh Thakur.
“NVDA is gearing to come up with the needed infrastructure to aid in fish production. Apart from fishing activities, fish eggs collection water bodies, centres for collecting fish eggs and also for weighing the fish collected would be developed in the periphery of these reservoirs,” Thakur added in the release.
