THE NARMADA Valley Development Authority (NVDA) has decided to prepare a master plan on unexplored hydel power potential available in Narmada valley.
For this, the Indian Institute Of Technology (IIT), Roorkee will conduct a technical study in the Narmada basin. NVDA Vice Chairman Uday Kumar Verma said on Sunday that besides major hydel power projects being constructed in the Valley, there was a possibility of large unexplored hydel power potential in Narmada basin.
He said in view of the present and future power demand of the State, there was a great need to exploit even the smallest hydel power potential.
In this scenario, NVDA had approached IIT, Roorkee to conduct the survey and study unexplored potential. Verma said Alternate Hydro Energy Center (AHEC) of IIT Roorkee has well-equipped facilities specially created to cater to needs of studying small hydropower projects.
The AHEC will conduct the study and prepare composite master plan that will help prepare detailed project reports. Verma added that besides major hydel power projects, the NVDA had already explored possibilities of nine mini hydel power projects in upper Narmada zone.
These are, Raghavpur (20 MW), Rosra (35 MW), Basania (60 MW), Chinki (50 MW), Sitareva (15 MW), Handia (51 MW), Boras (55 MW), Hoshangabad (60 MW), and Gopalpur (25 MW).
These mini hydel power projects will create a total potential of 370 MW. IIT Roorkee has consented to the proposal with an estimated expenditure of about Rs 48 lakh over the study and preparation of composite master plan, Verma said.
