A day after registering a case in connection with the distribution of a video compact disk (CD) reportedly showing a senior Congress leader in a compromising position with a woman, a CID team raided a Mandi hotel and seized a computer hard disk, laptop and few documents on Sunday.
The hotel owner, Lawan Kumar, is contesting for the Mandi parliamentary seat on the ticket of Prism, a smalltime political party that was earlier an NGO based in New Delhi.
A deputy superintendent of police (DSP) headed the Central Investigation Department (CID) team. No CID official was ready to give details and the motive behind the seizure, though a source said the police suspected Lawan Kumar's involvement in the distribution of the CDs.
Lawan Kumar, who contacted Hindustan Times over the phone, condemned the police action. He described it as a “ploy” of the ruling government to stop him from contesting for the Mandi parliamentary seat against the wife of chief minister Virbhadra Singh. “I have nothing to do with the CD,” he said.
He said that he had like others also received a CD containing the video at his doorstep. “Why did the police not raid other people's houses?”
