Right from guitarists gathering to play music and young political workers hopping like frogs, people are doing are doing everything possible for a good monsoon.

D S Parihar, the chief municipal officer of Sehore district, about 40 km from Bhopal, uses a ringtone with sound of flowing water to pray for rains. “This can be one of many ways to propitiate the rain god,” Parihar said.

Last week, leaders of all religions gathered in Bhopal and held Ramayana recital continuously for 24-hours on a boat.

People are also trying age-old occult practices for early rains. Recently, some shopkeepers from Indore took out a funeral procession of a man who was alive urging the god for rains.

In Jhabua district, some women (completely nude) yoked themselves to plough during nights praying for rains.

Similarly, the marriages of donkeys are being performed in cremation grounds to appease the rain god in the adjoining districts of Malwa region.
