EVEN THOUGH government schools re-opened for the new academic session today, it failed to bring smiles on the faces of students. For them it marked the beginning of yet another session wherein they would have to bear with problems they faced last year.
There are a good number of schools in the State that do not have toilets and drinking water facility. Majority of the students entered the same old stinking buildings not whitewashed for years on end. Students of basic schools still sit ground reality as furniture in most schools is not yet ready.
Like earlier years, they did not get books on the opening day of the new session due to delivery delay. Similarly, they had to do with the old midday meal as the materials for the new recipe was yet to arrive. Kitchen sheds in most cases were not ready and the utensils to cook food were lacking.
All these came out during various surveys and research work by different agencies. They speak volumes about the poor state of educational infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh.
One of them, Oxfam, that recently conducted a survey of some 120 schools in various districts of the State, found that none of them had laboratories. Their study also showed that there were just 68 schools with toilets and 17 had libraries.
