Reading about a fellow sportsman's battle against cancer, hockey Olympian Rahul Singh's thoughts immediately switch to the life of his brother, the late Vivek Singh. On Tuesday, playing at the MHA Mahindra Stadium, the Mumbai Customs player was grappling the memories of his elder brother, who lost his fight against cancer seven years ago.
Rahul, said he could relate to what Yuvraj's family must be going through now.
"I have closely witnessed my brother's battle with cancer and so I can understand the mental and physical state of cricketer Yuvraj Singh and his family," said the Olympian after his team's match against Air India.
Vivek, who had represented the country in Seoul Olympics in 1988, died of urinary bladder cancer in February 2005.
He was first diagnosed with cancer in 2000 while playing league matches in Kolkata and since then he continued his battle with the disease for around five years.
Though, he had lost his elder brother, Rahul is quite hopeful that India's cricket World Cup hero will not only successfully overcome the deadly disease but also dazzle on the field once again.
"Cancer is deadly and an individual needs both proper medical treatment and God's intervention to overpower it but I have complete faith on Yuvraj's ability to overcome this hurdle," he said.
