On the winning side since 1967

Each winner in the Tiruvottiyur constituency near Chennai has been lucky since 1967. His or her party has been on the victorious side in the state. KV Lakshmana reports.

Each winner in the Tiruvottiyur constituency near Chennai has been lucky since 1967. His or her party has been on the victorious side in the state.

And if this pattern can hold this time too, the ruling DMK should be worried at the anger among the voters in this largest constituency of Tiruvalluvar district, north Chennai.

Fisheries minister KPP Samy is contesting here this time too, as he did in 2006.

In 1967, Tiruvottiyur chose the DMK candidate and C Annadurai became CM. 1971 was lucky for M Karunanidhi, who could then remain CM after getting the office in 1969 following Annadurai's death. After MG Ramachandran (MGR) parted ways with Karunanidhi and floated the AIADMK, Tiruvottiyur chose an AIADMK candidate in 1977. That helped MGR to become the head of the government.

In 1980, Congress candidate Kumari Anandan won the seat in alliance with the AIADMK. In 1984 too, a Congress candidate won. On each occasion the alliance came to power.

When the DMK returned to power in 1989 after MGR’s death in 1987, it was the turn of TK Palaniswamy to win. This trend of predicting the ruler continued in 1991, when the electorate switched its allegiance to the AIADMK and J

The fishing folk are restive. “If anything, she (Jayalalithaa) will stamp out the rowdyism,” said A Armugam, a fisherman.
