All professional educational institutions under the Central government will now accept students only through the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Announcing this as part of a new policy, the HRD ministry has clarified that this would be optional for Central and deemed universities.

A ministry spokesperson said, "Under the new policy, it is mandatory for all educational institutions like the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IITs), National Institute of Forge and Foundry Technology, Ranchi, the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi, and other institutes of the Central government to base their admissions on the AIEEE."

Regarding Central universities and deemed universities, the spokesperson said, "It is up to these institutions to participate in the common entrance examination or conduct their own based on a transparent procedure."

A similar decision has been taken with regard to common entrance tests for business management courses conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), said the spokesperson.
