Police here said an unruly mob resorted to stone pelting on police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers demanding the release of some people arrested for violence.

"After tear smoke shells and baton charge failed to quell the mob, the CRPF troopers had to open fire to bring the situation under control," a senior police official said here.

A youth identified as Aijaz Ahmad Sofi, 24, was killed on the spot and four others sustained bullet injuries, he said.

"The injured have been shifted to hospitals in Srinagar for specialised treatment. Further re-enforcements of police and CRPF have been rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control," he said.

Groups of youth had engaged the police and the CRPF in the town Saturday too. A mob had severely damaged a police vehicle in the town when it was bringing some detainees to the town from the adjoining Kupwara district.
