The incident occurred late last night in Perumalkoil Patti when armed members of another community attacked people taking the bulls for jallikattu allegedly after verbal duel over participation in the sport, they said.

Seven persons were injured in the clash and admitted to government hospital where a 45-year old man died, they said.

Nearly 300 people gathered in front of the hospital on Sunday demanding the arrest of those responsible for the death, triggering tension in the town.

Police said twenty-eight persons had been arrested in connection with the clash.

Armed police has been deployed in the village to monitor the situation, which is under control now. "If necessary we will arrest more people in connection with the clash after an inquiry," police said.
