In his first interview after his appointment, Sharma, who was Director (Finance) of ONGC, said that his priority would be to "restore employee confidence and resolve all conflict issues."

He said he would like to address all conflict issues through consensus and run the Board in the most democratic fashion, adhering to the principles of highest corporate governance.

Sharma, whose appointment followed the denial of extension to Subir Raha as CMD of India's most valuable company, admitted that the company had conflict issues with its administrative ministry, with outside parties and within the company, which he would like to address in a systematic and orderly manner.

While appointing Sharma as the interim chief of ONGC, the Petroleum Ministry in an order said: "It has also been decided to initiate, the selection process of the new CMD of ONGC through the Public Enterprise Selection Board."
