Despite increasing incidents of robberies involving cab gangs in the Millennium City, commuters are forced to take lifts in unknown vehicles due to lack of basic intra-city transport facilities.
Of the total 190 buses of the Haryana Roadways, only 12 are used to ferry around 15 lakh people travelling within the city daily. The frequency of these buses is 30-35 minutes.
As several commuters depend on public transport, taking lifts from unknown vehicles is the only option for them during night when the state-run buses stop plying. Such commuters become easy target of cab gangs who assault and rob innocent people.
The existing buses cover only MG Road, Mega Mall, sectors 56, 57, 43, 46, Subhash Chowk and Rajiv Chowk areas.
Transport department officials also admit that the city has “no proper bus service”.
“The new bus service will surely provide a comfortable and safe journey to passengers,” said a Haryana Roadways official. Earlier, the transport department announced that it will provide more buses for intra-city transportation and also identified some routes to run these buses. But the commuters are still waiting for the additional fleet of state-run buses.
“Having more buses will help reduce transportation woes of commuters. We can also avoid robberies and other untoward incidents,” said Rakesh Ranjan, a daily commuter.
