These views were expressed by Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University Kota, Vice-Chancellor Prof V Vyas while speaking as the chief guest at the symposium on " Significance of self-study material in distance education" organised by Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU) here on Wednesday.

According to Prof Vyas distance education is based on self study material and the result is directly related to the study material supplied to the students. Thus clear and useful norms should be formulated to check the usefulness of the prepared study materials. He said that substantial commercialisation of education has been noticed in the present times and education is being treated as a commodity.

Prof Vyas said that preparation of skill development courses is an uphill task for the traditional universities whereas open universities can easily run courses on skill and personality development which is an essential feature of open universities in the era of globalisation. Proper attention given during the preparation of self study material for skill development courses will help the students excel in the market.

Prof Vyas released the study material prepared by UPRTOU for MA (political science) second semester. Prof Yadav presented a memento to Prof Vyas on the occasion . The programme was conducted by Dr Harish Chandra Agarwal while Dr Arjun Tiwari proposed a vote of thanks.

Among those present on the occasion were Prof SP Gupta, Prof AN Dwivedi, Dr Ruchi Bajpai, Prof RB Singh, Prof KP Singh, KD Singh, Dr Anil Kumar Singh Bhadoria, Prabhat Chandra Mishra and several teachers and guides.
