THE SAMAJWADI Party on Tuesday announced that it would observe a general strike on June 13 against the massive hike in prices of petrol and diesel.

Talking to newspersons here, SP general secretary Amar Singh said the CPM had agreed to participate in the strike in UP, MP, West Bengal and Maharashtra.

Singh said he had already spoken to CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on the issue. Interestingly, while Karat has decided to support the SP-led strike, CPI general secretary AB Bardhan has extended support to VP Singh’s Jan Morcha alliance on the issue.

Amar Singh said the Rashatriya Lok Dal (RLD) would also support the strike.

Samajwadi Party general secretary Beni Prasad Verma assailed the Centre for the hike in petrol and diesel prices. Without naming VP Singh, Verma said some people had come here at the instigation of the Congress in a bid to destabilise the government. Verma lauded Amar Singh for fostering developmental activities in UP.
