THE OPPOSITION demanded the immediate transfer of Chhindwara Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Sharma, accusing him of patronising gangs of criminals. When refused an assurance regarding transfer of district SP, the Opposition staged a walk out in protest.
Participating in a debate over dacoity at a jeweller’s shop in the town on January 4, even the ruling party MLAs said an atmosphere of terror and insecurity prevailed in the town and people had lost faith in the police.
Some of the Opposition MLAs including Harvansh Singh, Dr Sunilam, Rajnarayan Singh and Manmohan Shah Batti suggested the district SP was himself behind the incident and unless he was removed from the post, dacoits, who came bursting hand grenades like baratis in a marriage procession and took away jewellery worth over Rs 80 lakh, could not be arrested.
Dr Sunilam said the Chief Minister was himself aware of the opinion of his party MLAs’ about the district SP, who had unequivocally complained about his conduct in the review meeting held by him, and following the latest incident of dacoity, it was demanded that the SP would be suspended.
Former Minister Harvansh Singh said Chhindwara, known as a peaceful town a couple of years ago, had become a hub of activity of criminals. And, in none of the big incidents of crime like the latest one, no arrests could be made.

Minister of State for Home, Nagendra Singh, however, maintained that transfer of district SP could be effected once the special team sent from Bhopal for investigation of the matter sent its report and he was held guilty of laxity.
